The numbers, worked
A 3% fee is taken from the whole amount charged. Charge $1,030.00 and the fee is $30.90, so $999.10 lands.
Dividing by 0.97 instead: $1,000.00 ÷ 0.97 = $1,030.93. Three percent of that is $30.93, which leaves exactly $1,000.00.
For any percent, divide by (1 − percent as a decimal). If the fee also has a fixed part, add it first; the fixed fee field does that.
Questions
Why isn't adding 3% enough?
Because the 3% is taken from the larger amount, including the 3% you added. The shortfall is 3% of the 3%.
What is the shortcut for 3%?
Divide by 0.97. For 2.5%, divide by 0.975; for 3.5%, by 0.965.
Does this work for a card fee with $0.30?
